Carbon-Free Aluminium Energy Storage explained in one minute

How can aluminium helpstore renewable energy for months or even seasons? A new one-minute video by REVEAL’s researcher and project manager, Daníel Þór Gunnarsson from IceTec (Tæknisetur), provides a simple and engaging answer.

The REVEAL concept combines innovative aluminium smelting technologies with long-term energy storage. Renewable electricity can be used to produce aluminium with very low carbon emissions. This aluminium then acts as an energy carrier, storing energy until it is needed. Through controlled reactions, the stored energy can later be released in the form of heat and hydrogen, while the resulting alumina is recycled back into aluminium production, creating a circular energy storage cycle.

A key component of this concept is the development of carbon-free aluminium production technologies. Within REVEAL, partners are working on inert anode smelting technologies that replace conventional carbon electrodes, eliminating direct CO₂ emissions from the electrolysis process and producing oxygen instead.

The video offers an accessible overview of these innovations and illustrates how REVEAL aims to contribute to Europe’s transition towards a sustainable, low-carbon energy system.
