Arctus Secures €2 Million for Scale-Up
One of the strongest indicators of successful research and innovation is when technologies continue to attract investment and move towards commercial deployment after a project has ended. REVEAL is proud to witness exactly this development through the achievements of its consortium partner, Arctus Aluminium.
Arctus Aluminium has recently secured domestic funding and successfully closed financing for a €2 million project aimed at scaling up its innovative aluminium smelting technology to a 15 kA demonstration plant in Iceland. This milestone represents an important step towards industrial implementation and highlights the significant potential of the technology developed and advanced within the REVEAL ecosystem.
The company’s ambitions do not stop there. Building on this success, Arctus Aluminium is already preparing the next stage of development: the scale-up to a commercial-size 100 kA plant. This forward-looking strategy demonstrates strong confidence in the technology’s ability to contribute to a more sustainable aluminium industry and to support future energy storage systems.
Within REVEAL, Arctus Aluminium has been developing an inert anode smelting process, an innovative approach that replaces conventional carbon electrodes used in aluminium production. Unlike traditional smelting methods, which generate substantial CO₂ emissions, inert anode technology produces oxygen instead of carbon dioxide during the electrolysis process. In addition to its environmental benefits, the process also has the potential to reduce energy consumption and improve production efficiency.
This technology plays a crucial role in REVEAL’s vision of using aluminium as a sustainable energy carrier for long-term energy storage. By enabling low-carbon aluminium production, Arctus helps address one of the key prerequisites for making aluminium-based energy storage environmentally and economically viable.
REVEAL congratulates the entire Arctus Aluminium team on this remarkable achievement and looks forward to following the next steps on their journey from innovative research to commercial reality.
