REVEAL at ICSOBA 2025

The REVEAL project is proud to share that our colleague Samuel Senanu will be representing the consortium at the 43rd International Conference and Exhibition ICSOBA 2025 in Nanning, China.

Samuel will deliver a presentation titled Review of Lining Materials and Their Degradation in Aluminium Electrolysis Cells on October 29, from 1:45 PM to 2:10 PM in Main Ballroom 3. In addition to his presentation, he will also serve as Session Chairman for the Aluminium Electrolysis Session 18 on Thursday, October 30.

The presentation of the SINTEF research team, co-authored with Egil Skybakmoen, Arne Petter Ratvik, Zhaohui Wang, and Asbjørn Solheim, examines the increasing demands placed on lining materials in modern high-amperage aluminium electrolysis cells. As the industry strives for higher energy efficiency and productivity, materials are required to withstand extreme operating conditions. The paper reviews the latest developments in high-performance lining materials, such as nitride-bonded silicon carbide side blocks, eco-friendly PAH-free binders, and highly graphitised carbon cathode blocks. It also addresses degradation mechanisms driven by elevated current densities and sodium activity, which pose significant challenges to maintaining cell performance and longevity.

Through this contribution, REVEAL continues to advance the understanding of material performance and sustainability in aluminium production. Samuel’s participation at ICSOBA 2025 is a great opportunity to promote innovation and share research insights with the global aluminium community.
