New publications in scientific journals
The REVEAL project continues to deliver cutting-edge research in the field of aluminium-based energy storage, with two new scientific papers recently published in leading international journals. These publications represent important progress across the aluminium energy cycle, from production technologies to energy release pathways.
The first paper, published in the Journal of Sustainable Metallurgy, is titled Characterisation of the Off-Gases from an Inert Anode Al Electrolysis Cell.
Authored by S. Senanu, G. Gunnarsson, D. Gunnarsson, O. Kjos, H. Gaertner, R. Meirbekova, and J. H. Magnússon, and contributed by partners SINTEF and IceTec, the study focuses on analysing off-gases from inert anode aluminium electrolysis cells.
This research supports the development of carbon-free aluminum production processes, a key enabler for using aluminum as a sustainable energy carrier. Understanding off-gas composition is essential for improving process efficiency, reducing emissions, and ensuring safe and scalable industrial implementation.
The second paper, published in the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, is titled Activating Aluminium for Oxidation and Hydrogen Release: Overcoming the Passivation Barrier with Superheated Steam.
Authored by N. Van de Velde, A. Drinčić, M. Grom, B. Likozar, B. Genorio, M. Haller, and I. Jerman, with contributions from NIC and OST, the study addresses one of the key challenges in aluminium-based energy systems: the passivation barrier that limits aluminium’s reactivity.
The research demonstrates how superheated steam can be used to activate aluminium, enabling efficient oxidation and hydrogen release. This represents a significant step forward in utilising aluminium as a reliable and controllable energy carrier.
Together, these publications showcase REVEAL’s integrated approach to developing aluminum-based energy storage systems, tackling both upstream production and downstream energy conversion challenges. By advancing scientific understanding and providing validated experimental insights, REVEAL helps develop scalable, climate-neutral energy storage solutions that support Europe’s transition to a low-carbon energy system.
