Revolutionizing Renewable Energy Storage

The REVEAL project is set to transform the landscape of renewable energy storage. By leveraging innovative technologies, we aim to provide a sustainable, efficient, and cost-effective solution for long-term energy storage. Discover how our groundbreaking approach can pave the way for a climate-neutral Europe.

the challenge

Europe must become climate-neutral, but one key element is still missing: affordable seasonal energy storage

  • Renewable electricity is abundant in summer, but scarce in winter.

  • Heat demand peaks exactly when solar output is lowest.

  • Current long-term storage options are inefficient, costly, or dependent on carbon sources.

the reveal solution

REVEAL introduces a new Power-to-X pathway: renewable electricity is converted into aluminium fuel via a carbon-free electrolysis process. This aluminium is solid, safe, and transportable, and can be stored loss-free for months or seasons. When needed, it is reconverted into heat, electricity, or hydrogen. The result is a circular, emission-free and highly scalable storage cycle.

How It Works

  1. Power-to-Al – CO₂-free electrolysis produces renewable aluminium fuel.

  2. Storage – aluminium is safely stored and transported without losses for months.

  3. Al-to-Energy – two conversion routes (low-temperature aqueous and high-temperature steam) produce hydrogen and heat.

  4. Closing the loop – alumina is recycled into the cycle; impurities are tracked to stable levels.

REVEAL project‘s energy storage cycle based on the oxidation and reduction of aluminium, with a high temperature discharging process.

REVEAL pursues four main objectives:

Closed material energy cycle

Demonstrate a complete aluminium-based storage cycle with a practical energy density above 15 MWh/m³ and stable performance over several charge–discharge cycles.

Efficient Al-to-Energy conversion

Design and build Al-to-Energy units that convert aluminium fuel into hydrogen and heat with over 95% efficiency, providing reliable energy for buildings and industry.

CO₂-free Power-to-Al process

Develop and validate aluminium electrolysis with inert electrodes, achieving more than 60% efficiency and eliminating greenhouse gas emissions from smelting.

Life-cycle and economic analysis

Assess sustainability and cost competitiveness, targeting storage costs below €0.07/kWh and affordable end-user energy supply around €0.20/kWh by 2030.

IMPACT

REVEAL delivers a breakthrough in seasonal renewable storage. It enables Europe to rely on renewables all year round, cutting winter dependency on fossil fuels. The technology supports buildings, industry, mobility and off-grid areas with affordable, safe and circular energy. Beyond technical progress, it strengthens European energy security, reduces imports, and opens new market opportunities. .

Why is REVEAL a Game-Changer?

High Energy Density

Our solution offers an unmatched energy storage density of over 15 MWh/m³, significantly higher than current alternatives.

Cost-Effective

The cost of converting electricity into a storable form is attractively low, making it a viable option for widespread use.

Environmentally Friendly

Our process minimizes environmental impact, with no emissions during storage and conversion.

Safe and Easy Storage

Aluminum is easy to store and transport, without the need for pressurized or cooled containers.
